Cocktail Dresses

In the 1920’s, the introduction of Chanel’s LBD (Little Black Dress) created one of the most important fashion trends of all time: The cocktail dress. The cocktail dress is feminine, flirty, sexy, and perfectly created for a night out. Christian Dior was the first to give title to the “cocktail dress”, which resulted in department stores and magazines promoting fashion using this new terminology. Cocktail dresses became fashionable during prohibition. Cocktail parties were usually held between the evening hours of 6:00 and 8:00 and developed a reputation as being chic and sophisticated events. Attending these parties meant wearing an appropriate outfit. Women wore ankle length dresses with small hats, gloves, and fashionable handbags.

Today, the length of a cocktail dress is often long. When it falls about 2 inches above the ankle, it is referred to as ‘tea length.’ When it is almost touching the ankle, it is referred to as ‘ballerina length’. For less formal occasions, a shorter length cocktail dress is acceptable. The cocktail dresses available on Buyer Select work well for holiday parties, weddings, a fun night out, or a semi-formal event.
